Description

This is a compulsory module on MA Mathematics Education and must be taken during your programme of study. Mathematics for Teachers is a module that aims to deepen and develop participating students’ mathematics subject knowledge for teaching in areas related to school curricula. Starting from your level of mathematics (e.g., GCSE, A-level or beyond) you will consider what it means to understand mathematics, to ask and answer questions and to struggle to 'see it'.Ìý

This module will be delivered following a blended learning approach. This means that there will be a combination of ‘live’ teaching, self-study and online collaborative activities. In teaching sessions, mathematical tasks that are conceptually rich without needing technical fluency are offered in order to engage participants and demonstrate the potential for sophisticated reasoning with fundamental mathematical objects.Ìý

This module is suitable for those interested in understanding the nature of mathematical knowledge for teaching whether or not they are currently a practicing teacher. In particular, the module is suitable for primary practitioners – teachers and advisors – who are interested in deepening their own mathematical knowledge and better understanding links across the curriculum; secondary school or college teachers of mathematics wanting to increase their repertoire of challenging ideas in ‘low threshold high ceiling’ mathematical contexts.Ìý

Pre-requisites: A degree in a mathematics-rich subject or education, or equivalent experience teaching mathematics.Ìý
