Description

The module introduces students to the main currents of literary and cultural theory in the 20th and 21st centuries: Russian formalism, Mikhail Bakhtin’s thought, French and Czech structuralism, semiotics of the Tartu school, poststructuralism (Derrida, Foucault, the Yale School, New Historicism), phenomenology, hermeneutics and reader - response criticism, psychoanalysis, Marxist and post-Marxist approaches to literature and culture, and gender and postcolonial theories. The module relates these approaches to each other, showing how literary and cultural research may converge, and also relates them to the theories of social research.
