Description
This module offers an introduction to key aspects of Spanish and Latin American history and culture from the late medieval period to the 19th century, and acts as a foundation for all students studying a degree with Spanish in the title. It exposes students to a variety of materials, including prose fiction, visual forms, historical documents etc. and explores different ways of making sense of them through historical contextualisation, close reading and critical analysis. Students gain a critical appreciation of the canon of Spanish and Latin American Studies, whilst also developing the tools to explore less canonical authors and materials. It is the first part of a two-part core course; the second part uses the same approach to continue the study of Spain and Latin America up to the 21st century.
