Description

This module introduces the buy-side financial services regulatory infrastructure which exists in the UK and EU predominantly, the role of various regulatory bodies such as the UK’s FCA and PRA, the EU’s ESMA, ECB, and EBA, and the importance of relevant trade bodies such as the AIMA (specific to alternative investments and hedge funds), EVCA and BVCA (specific to PE/VC), UK Innovate Finance (specific to fintech companies).

This module aims to provide students with a deep understanding of regulations in investment management practice across retail and entrepreneurial finance within alternative investment funds (hedge, venture, and private equity funds). The specific goal is to provide a practical framework in which investment case studies of investment funds and start-up Fintech ventures could be implemented across the globe, from perspective of an investor, entrepreneur and/or digital finance client.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the module, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate understanding of the interaction between the regulatory policy, alternative investment funds and investors/clients.
  • analyse and implement the regulations that alternative funds and Fintech companies should follow since inception, including governance.
  • assess when to be proactive and reactive in terms of regulations, in particular when looking at Fintech and digital assets.
  • evaluate the different fund services, administration, and taxation and impact on companies and investors using global case studies.
