Description

Content: On PSYC0005, you will be introduced to the various experimental methods used in the different disciplines of psychology. These methods will provide you will the key tools you require to conduct your own research. In both term 1 and 2 you will have the opportunity to design your own experiments, collect your own data, and present your results at end of year poster conferences.

Teaching delivery: This module runs over Terms 1 and 2 and is usually taught using a combination of lectures (in-person and pre-recorded) and small group demonstrator sessions. There is also usually a poster conference at the end of each teaching term. Most weeks will have a 1 hour in-person lecture and a 75-minute demonstrator session (with additional pre-recorded lectures).

Indicative Topics: Indicative topics – based on module content in 2023/24, subject to possible changes: How to design psychology experiments, Scientific interpretation and evaluation, Writing a lab report introduction and discussion, Writing a lab report methods and results, IAT Experiment, Open Science practices, Overcoming the cognitive constraints on science, Reproducible science and research bias, How to perform a literature search, How to interpret non-significant results, Social Lab experiment, Memory lab experiment, Charity project, Hypothesis generation, Experiment building, Data analysis.

Module Aims: This module aims to: Ìý Ìý

- Develop a core understanding of experimentation and communication in the psychological sciences.

- Develop the research methods skills needed for research projects conducted in Years 2 and 3.

- Develop important transferable skills in communication, critical thinking, and scientific reasoning.
