Description
This introductory-level module introduces students to key concepts and theoretical debates in the politics of the Americas. The module will provide students with a robust disciplinary understanding of politics, the ways in which the discipline shapes understandings of contemporary political developments in the Americas, and how the region in turn affects theoretical debates in the study of politics. Classes will focus on introducing students to politics as a social science subject and cover key elements of the discipline, including ideas, behaviour, institutions and policy processes. It also explores state forms and functions, and state-citizen relationships. The module adopts a perspective on the discipline of politics that that emphasizes the importance of understanding political processes in a globalized word. Substantive topics and detailed analysis of case studies will be drawn from the Americas, in order to introduce students to the comparative differences and similarities of political processes in Latin America, North America, and the Caribbean.
