Module Content
This is an introductory course in phonetics, including lab work, transcription and aural/oral practice. This module introduces basic phonetic concepts and focuses on developing critical skills, with the aim of providing a foundation for further study in phonetics, phonology, and related fields.
Teaching Delivery
Teaching is delivered using a mixture of weekly pre-recorded videos, lecture (2 hours per week), and small-group tutorials (1 hour per week).
Indicative Topics
Indicative lecture topics are based on module content in 2023/24, subject to possible changes.
Vocal anatomy, phonetic transcription using the International Phonetic Alphabet, production of speech sounds, introduction to acoustic phonetics (waveforms and spectrograms), tone, phonation, airstream mechanisms.
Module Aims and/or Objectives
Students to appreciate how knowledge is created in Experimental Linguistics. Students will apply theirÌýknowledge of experimental design and acquire core experimental techniques.
The primary learning objectives are:
• To understand how all of the sounds of the world’s languages are produced.
• To be able to transcribe speech sounds using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA).
• To understand basic acoustic and aerodynamic properties of speech, and some tools used to study these properties.
• To apply this knowledge in understanding how speech sounds are used and distributed in the world’s languages.
