Description
Language often reflects social reality, through the patterns and beliefs of culture. This undergraduate module investigates traditional Chinese values, e.g., Confucianism, Daoism, Ethics, to give students an overall background knowledge of the role of these philosophers and their impact on society and family structures over time. It will then move on to analyse Chinese family value orientations through the lenses of language and culture. The course is split into thematic units: Confucianism; Daoism; Morals and ethics; Hierarchy in politics, society and family; Religion and society; Materialism and society; Education and language changes in contemporary China and Taiwan. We will, through these units, explore the traditional values and explore changing values in modern Chinese society. This will enable students to examine the impact of these changes on the use of language, as well as the social reality between language and any likely resultant cultural changes/developments.
This module is not suitable students whose native language is Mandarin and/or did secondary school in China, as you will already be familiar with this module's content..
