This is an intermediate level syntax module and prior to taking this module, you should have taken an introductory level module, e.g. PLIN0004. PLIN0024 is one of two intermediate modules in generative grammar, the other being PLIN0067 Intermediate Generative Grammar: Word Order. They are independent modules and PLIN0067 is not a prerequisite for PLIN0024 (although you are welcome to take both if you choose).

Module Content
This is an intermediate level module in generative grammar with a special emphasis on theories treating displacement and islands. It will introduce students to constraints on syntactic movement (filler-gap dependencies) and to the leading theories of these constraints.
Teaching Delivery
Teaching takes the form of weekly lectures and backups.
Indicative Topics
Indicative lecture topics are based on module content in 2023/24, subject to possible changes.
Indicative Topics: Constraints on syntactic movement, strategies of question formation in different languages, syntactic reflexes of quantifier scope
Module Aims and/or Objectives
The main module objectives are:
To give an overview of some of the most important empirical discoveries and theoretical debates in the study of syntax of the last 50 years.
To enable students to read and understand primary literature.
To enable students to do a close critical reading and write a review of research papers.
