Description

This intermediate level module offers undergraduate students the opportunity to conduct field and archival work in human geography using a variety of qualitative and quantitative methods. The location may change from year to year, and the module is intended to cover fieldwork in both the UK and internationally. It will also allow projects to be conducted across a wide range ofÌýsubdisciplinaryÌýand interdisciplinary fields of human geography: urban, historical, political, cultural, economic, social, environmental, and more.Ìý

±õ²ÔÌý2024-25Ìýwe willÌýhopefully be visitingÌýGibraltarÌýand our main focus will be onÌýcultural and political geography. Please note:ÌýField classes will only run subject to a minimum enrolment of 10 students.

While it is possible to develop your own projects, the module focuses on Gibraltar’s military role within the British Empire and its subsequent emergence as a site of political and cultural novelty. Through these broadÌýthematics, the module aims to introduce students to working with historical, textual,ÌývisualÌýand ethnographic sources to better understand Gibraltar’s historical, cultural and political geographies.

The trip itself will take place,Ìýout of term time (exact dates to be announced),ÌýandÌýwill cover a range ofÌýday-long projects over five days. Fieldwork will include visits to museums and other city sites; walks; researching original materials in the Garrison Library; and work on individual projects. This will help you to prepare for the assessed work by providing you with a chance to carry out research for your essay.

The module will allow students to engage critically with aspects of the site, to practice research methods, and to think about research design, tying this module toÌýa number ofÌýcompulsory modules (Methods, Practice of Geography) and optional modules.

Students taking this module will develop the following careers skills: Critical thinking;ÌýTeam working; Interpersonal skills;ÌýCommunication: academic writing;ÌýCommunication: verbal;ÌýPresentation skills; Time management; Qualitative research skills (observation, note-taking, research design and implementation);ÌýQualitative analysis (discourse and visual analysis);ÌýField work (observation, note-taking).

Fieldwork costs: Group travel from/to London and accommodation in Gibraltar will be organised and paid for by Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê. If students need to book travel arrangements or change pre-booked travel arrangementsÌýin order toÌýattend the fieldwork,Ìýsuch costs will need to be absorbed by the student.
