Description

This module analyses historical and contemporary perspectives on forced migration and the range of theories on conflict and violence that causes these events. The module aims to introduce students to a range of theories in conflict and migration so that they will be able to analyse the root causes of different types of conflicts and violence, such as direct violence, structural violence and representational violence. They will gain a sound understanding of the pull and push factors of migration; the situations of refugees and internally displaced people (IDPs); and IDP and refugee relationships with their host community. This module is a unique opportunity for students to acquire knowledge through interdisciplinary approaches. Lectures will examine key events and ideas that have contributed to diverse forms of forced migration, including migrant labour in the Gulf, the Turkey-Greece population exchange, modern slavery, and immobility as a reason behind vulnerability. The issues of gender-based violence, reconciliation and transitional justice, and human smuggling will be examined. Seminars and tutorials will be used for discussion groups and feedback sessions.Ìý
