Description

This module consists of group-based PBL activities. The activities are modelled on scenarios (or mini-projects) that incorporate materials taught in modules 1-5. The students will work on 4 scenarios, based on material taught in the four compulsory taught modules of the MSc Future Manufacturing and Nanoscale Engineering and supported by the characterisation techniques taught in module 2. The aim will be to show an understanding of the concepts taught in the previous modules as applied to practical manufacturing challenges. All challenges will have a focus on sustainability and EDI in group work.

Ìý

Aims of the module

The aim of the module is to enable students to solve real-world problems by integrating the knowledge and skills they learnt from all modules of this programme. The students will have the opportunities to implement the entire workflow of tackling an engineering challenge, from define the requirements and design a solution to manufacture and test a prototype. This module will help students enhance the understanding of fundamental knowledge and apply advanced techniques by incorporating manufacturing, sustainability and economic considerations.

Intended learning outcomes

On completion of this module, students will be able to:

  1. Define design requirements related to an engineering challenge, including functions, objectives, constraints, resources, risk analysis
  2. Design a solution to the challenge, including manufacturing considerations and practicality, sustainability, marketability and financial considerations, ethics
  3. Integrate technical knowledge acquired from all modules (e.g. materials design, architecture, nanomanufacturing techniques) to manufacture a functional prototype and test the extent and limitations of the proposed solution to meet the requirements of the challenge
  4. Demonstrate effective teamwork through consideration of professional collaboration in a diverse team
  5. Communicate effectively the viability of the proposed solution, and its impact to a variety of audiences
