Description
This module explores the value of material culture for the study of geography. It aims to familiarise students with the work of key authors in this field and to develop their ability to engage with interdisciplinary debates around these issues. in a variety of contexts. The module is split into three sections. The first introduces key approaches to consumption and material culture from political economy, sociology, anthropology, geography, history, archaeology, and other disciplines. The second considers contemporary debates across a range of different geographical subdisciplines. The final section returns to our starting definitions of materiality, asking what it would mean to rethink these in the light of current arguments about phenomenology, networks, assemblages, etc.
If possible, the module will conclude with a short excursion into London’s West End.
This module is suitable for students with previous experience of a range of discipines across the arts, humanities and social sciences and does not require any previous knowledge of the topics described above.
