Description

This module aims to equip students with a qualitative and quantitative understanding of the financing of renewable energy projects. The module will highlight the global picture of energy resource financing alongside a holistic and practical understanding of the project finance approach.Ìý

Initially, qualitative understanding will be embedded through the evaluation of global energy systems alongside the associated policy with an emphasis being placed on the role of climate change on their structure and development. These concepts will be underpinned by the relevant financial practice. An emphasis will be placed on how different systems, organisations, and regulatory bodies work together to form positive financial movement for projects associated with achieving relevant sustainable development goals (SDGs), the objectives of the Paris Climate Agreement and net zero on a global basis.ÌýÌý

The concept of environmental, social and governance (ESG) investing will be explored in detail. ESG investing theory and practice as appropriate for renewable resource project financing will be applied in the module. Additional reflections on the current position and outlook of ESG investing will be discussed. The financing of renewable energy projects in the global south, and how this differs to countries with developed infrastructure will be explored, highlighting some of the social, political, and economic challenges of sustainable resource financing.Ìý

Subsequently, the emphasis shifts to project financing, with a deep dive into the practicalities of its application in the resources sector. A practical and applicable understanding of the structure of project financing, covering corporate finance systems such as valuations and risk management will be developed. Quantitative and qualitative analysis of potential projects will be undertaken through this model.ÌýÌý
