Description
Systems engineering and programming languages for modelling and simulation provided the bedrock of computer-aided design in architecture. The module will first introduce you to the origins and principles of product modelling in the built environment and how these formed the foundations of contemporary digital engineering and Digital Twins. Next, this module will provide you with a deep understanding of how BIM links with other technologies, such as Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, Internet of Things and Blockchain to create a seamless digital thread across the project lifecycle. The module will equip you with the engineering skills to use commercial and experimental tools to integrate the interfaces across project front-end, design and construction.
At the end of this module you will be able to:
- Understand concepts, ideas, constructs of Virtual Design and Construction, and Digital Twins in the built environment
- Understand the origins of Computer-Aided Design, Building Information Modelling (BIM) and digital engineering in the built environment
- Identify and evaluate differences among virtual, augmented and mixed reality
- Outline interoperability solutions to streamline digital workflows
