Description
This practical module sees you working together on projects directly related to some of the most cutting-edge engineering design themes from local and global perspectives. The projects will give you the opportunity to learn how to identify real world problems, develop understanding and application of systems thinking approaches and design processes. It will also introduce you to developing your awareness of cultural, ethical and social needs in an engineering context.Ìý
You will work primarily in teams to carry out different activities and tasks associated with a themed project. This module aims to mimic the engineering workplace giving you an enhanced understanding of what it is to be an engineer, to promote a positive work ethic, to promote self-reliance and to increase employability skills.Ìý
In addition to tutorial activities, you will be able to work with your fellow students in a studio setting to carry out your practical work. You will be using presentation and group reports, reflective logs and journals to demonstrate your learning.Ìý
By the end of this module, students will be able to:Ìý
1. Demonstrate inventive and creative problem-solving skills through participation in different real-world based projects in relation to the role of engineering sciences.Ìý
2. Identify and demonstrate an understanding of systems thinking in a range of engineering disciplines.Ìý
3. Identify and demonstrate an understanding of the role of design processes and skills in a range of engineering disciplinary approaches.
4. Prototype and demonstrate an engineering design (using coding/CAD model).
5. Apply and evaluate interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and non-verbal) and competences in developing working relationships as part of teams.
6. Identify and demonstrate a critical understanding of the role that mathematical skills and scientific knowledge play in addressing real-world problems in the context of engineering sciences.
