Description

Design Make Information introduces students to the methodologies, techniques and evolving conventions of making information for the design, construction and evaluation of the built environment. Lectures are given by the building design team of a recently completed exemplar building – inviting the architect, structural engineer, services engineer, client, contractor etc., to describe the process, development and multi-faceted approach to design information. Masterclasses taught by leading practitioners and teachers provide preparatory knowledge to design make information, from conceiving an idea to design development and data management through to post-occupancy of buildings and feedback loops (e.g. Sketching / Diagrams / Technical Drawings / CAD / Scanning / PGS Surveying / Models / 3D Printing / Digital Analytical Modelling, as appropriate). Students develop these techniques in the emotive and measurable forms of drawing / modelling and crafting – the architect and engineer’s modes of communication. With the guidance of tutors, students produce a range of outputs that form a portfolio for assessment.

The aims of the module are:

ï‚· To introduce methods of Design Make Information used on a professionally designed exemplar project described from the multiple perspectives of the design team.

ï‚· To teach students the basic knowledge and skills through a series of Masterclasses in Design Make Information techniques.

ï‚· To support the production of a creative portfolio of work to inform the 1:1 construction.

ï‚· To support the learning outcomes outlined below

On successful completion of the course, each student will have achieved the following learning outcomes:

ï‚· A basic understanding of the skills, techniques and aptitude for making design information deployed in the construction industry.

ï‚· Develop skills, techniques and an aptitude for making their own design information on a live project (for DML) for the purposes of designing, making and evaluating buildings.

ï‚· Gain knowledge of conventions in the construction industry and the etymological development of these conventions.

ï‚· Gain knowledge of a broad range of methods for making information in Masterclasses from free-hand drawing techniques, through to CAD, GIS and G-Code. (The learning outcomes of the workshops will be updated in order to support the current tools and technologies that go into the design and construction of buildings).
