It considers pedagogical approaches and their application to different musical learning contexts. It explores the historical context of the UK, as well as international contexts, and how policy and practice reflect each other. It looks at the role of instrumental learning in music education and also how informal learning practices are now influencing instrumental teaching. The module offers an overview of current research in music education and how this is translated into practice. It is discussion based, drawing on students' experiences of their own teaching and learning experiences in varied national contexts.
