Description
This module provides students with hands-on, basic cell culture training focusing on the growth of adult and pluripotent stem cell culture. The module will provide students with insights into the intricacies of cell culture and the necessary laboratory infrastructure requirements. Students will develop the practical knowledge to propagate, maintain and characterize feeder and feeder-free stem cell lines. This includes the relevant analytical techniques and associated data analysis.
The module will also provide students with the skills and knowledge to effectively critique the research literature and understand the major considerations and tasks involved in the generation, handling, presenting and interpreting experimental data and designing, conducting and reporting a Research Project. The focus is on the development of generic skills in setting the aims for a research and/or development project, formulating a strategy to tackle the problem, designing data collection, analysis and interpretation frameworks and drawing conclusions.
On completion of this module, students will be able to:
- Develop the practical laboratory skills to propagate, maintain and characterize relevant stem and mammalian cell cultures.
- Employ the relevant practical skills to work safely and effectively in a biological laboratory facility.
- Construct and design appropriate experiments to collect, analyse and interpret biological and cell culture data, applying relevant statistical tools and research methodologies where relevant.
- Inoculate and operate industrially-relevant manufacturing platforms for cell expansion.
- Apply analytical skills to appropriately critique research literature and articulate this both orally and in written format.
- Formulate and devise relevant experimental studies to test hypotheses and undertake rigorous scientific studies.
- Understand how to engage in a research laboratory setting.
