Description
The module engages critically with what contemporary art is understood to be and the relation it has to education. It asks, where and by whom is contemporary art produced? How is it brought to public attention, interpreted and disseminated? Importantly it draws attention to the ways in which different forms of art making/practice are promoted and demoted across both museum and gallery education and within mainstream education in schools and colleges. The module also questions the persistence of certain world views and their influence on maintaining a western orientation and how, through the work of artists and educators, this might be re-orientated.
Assessment takes the form of a visual presentation and a 3,500 word assignment. Students not enrolled on the MA Art Education, Culture and Practice or the MA Museums and Galleries in Education programmes MUST contact the module tutor in the first instance before selecting on Portico.
