Description

This module will introduce you to mental health difficulties that commonly first present in childhood.ÌýThe module will provide a foundational understanding of the formulation of mental health problems,Ìýdrawing on evidence from the individual and their social world, and reflect on challenges andÌýcontroversies in the field of child mental health and diagnostic labels.
Teaching will be focused on examples of internalising and externalising problems, and trauma andÌýstressor related problems. We will also touch on neurodevelopmental disorders, where there mightÌýbe a higher risk of some mental health difficulties. A theme across all teaching in this module is toÌýconsider: whether multiple perspectives may (or may not) advance our understanding ofÌýdevelopmental and mental health difficulties; the benefits and limitations of our current diagnosticÌýclassification systems; how different mental health difficulties might present at different stages ofÌýchildhood; and the impact of specific types of mental health difficulties on a young person and theirÌýsocial world.
Building on this, this module will also include a foundational focus on prevention and interventionÌýapproaches that might reduce the likelihood of mental health difficulties developing, or help supportÌýchildren and adolescents experiencing common mental health difficulties. You will be introduced toÌýcommon principles and approaches to supporting child mental health, spanning multipleÌýperspectives, and including approaches focussing on the individual and those that target the systemsÌýaround children and adolescents.
Across the module the formative role of culture and context will be highlighted.
