Description

This module provides students with an understanding of human development from birth to old age. We address important concepts such as mental health in childhood and adolescence, atypical developmental trajectories such as language development and mathematical learning difficulties. Specific populations such as people with visual impairment, autism or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder are examined; and the implications for child development and learning are considered. Experimental methods related to cognitive abilities such as problem solving, multi-modal communication are evaluated.

The aims of the module are to:

    1. Provide knowledge of the key concepts in human growth and cognitive developmental trajectories in typical and atypical populations
    2. Create understanding of the cognitive profiles of atypical populations (e.g. autism and ADHD).
    3. Review and evaluate the literature regarding development as it relates to cognitive abilities (e.g. language, and mathematical learning and scientific thinking)
    4. Examine the relationships between cognitive development and mental health
    5. Provide understanding of neurocognitive research related to the impact of domain general abilities (e.g. vision or multi-modal processing) on domain specific outcomes (e.g. language or mathematics) and how these differ in atypical populations from typical populations.
