Description

‘Clinical aspects of musculoskeletal medicine’ will introduce you to the medical speciality of ‘Orthopaedics’ and provide you with an insight into the clinical management of musculoskeletal disease including diagnosis, examination, surgical intervention, and perioperative care. You will be taught by Specialist Consultants at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (RNOH) on this module. The scale of the problem of musculoskeletal disease to society will be discussed and illustrated with the latest epidemiological data. You will learn about the range of imaging modalities used to assess the musculoskeletal system, including X-ray, DXA, CT, MRI, bone scintigraphy and ultrasound. Common musculoskeletal problems such as osteoarthritis of the hip and knee will be covered in detail including predisposing factors, symptoms, surgical interventions and physiotherapy. More complex cases of joint replacement, as seen at the RNOH will be discussed. Spinal deformity and spinal surgery, a speciality at the RNOH, will be covered. You will learn about the design and success or failure of implants for joint replacement and spinal surgery. The classroom teaching on this module will be bought to life with visits to the operating theatre to observe orthopaedic surgery and to clinics to observe pre-surgery and post-operative care at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital.
