Description

This is a 15-credit Level 6 module for final-year students which takes place in Term 1. It explores the nature and significance of the Central and East European presence in the 21st century UK. Because most research is about Poles, it focuses on Poles in particular, but we also cover people from all countries in CEE, including Russia and the Caucasus. ÌýThe centrepiece of the module is the student’s original ethnographic fieldwork, interviewing migrants. They write this up as a project report which constitutes the module assessment. The module includes a strong research methods component. Ìý

The module considers the implications of migration for migrants themselves, for UK society and politics, and for sending countries. Concepts important in the module include transnationalism, ethnicity, diaspora, social cohesion, community and civil society. ÌýÌý

ÌýThe first half of the module focuses mainly on migrants, looking at their social networks, employment, social mobility and socio-economic integration, and individual experiences of transnational lives and acculturation in the context of highly diverse UK society. The second half of the module looks at broader issues around social cohesion, attitudes towards migrants in the UK and the political context, and finally opens still further to compare the experiences of Central and East Europeans in the UK to those in other countries in Western Europe and other continents.
