Description

To prepare a dissertation embracing an accredited (chartered engineering status) design study on a process for the production of biomaterials arising out of life science discoveries. Such biomaterials would typically include biopharmaceutical products arising out of phase II clinical trials and the dissertation will examine the four key stages to production:

  1. The creation and analysis of a bioprocess
  2. Economic appraisal of a bioprocess
  3. Facility design and layout
  4. Safety audit of a bioprocess

The module progresses through 3 stages towards the final design project element.

Stage 1: Whole bioprocess study (practical based studies)

Stage 2: Bioprocess entrepreneurial business plan (group work project)

Stage 3: The design project / dissertation (taught elements and group work)

Upon completion of the course, a student should be able to:

  • Complete an original research investigation at laboratory or pilot scale into the process performance for a target product
  • Undertake a specific role within a start-up company and produce a detailed business plan addressing all stages from evaluating technology readiness to research and development work to manufacturing issues, etc.
  • Undertake a full process design, based on a target product and specific constraints, including process analysis, economical appraisal, safety audit and facility layout.
