Description

This module seeks to analyse the socio-political developments in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. We start by discussing the development of national identity and statehood from the earliest history and through the first period of independence and the period of Soviet occupation until the present day. Throughout the module we will seek to discover the sources of political power in the Baltic states and seek to understand the relationship between power, legitimacy and identity. Particular attention will be paid to issues of nation-building; citizenship and integration; electoral and party politics; political culture; foreign policy; socio-economic change; EU and NATO enlargement and problems of migration.
