  1. Advanced Greek A (GREK0009)

Description

Teaching Delivery: This module is taught over 2 terms, in 20 x 1 hour classes taught by the main tutor and 20 x 1 hour PGTA-led seminars in each of terms 1 and 2.

Content: A study of Classical Greek language and literature, involving the reading and translation into English of prose and verse set texts, and their grammatical analysis and literary criticism, and the further consolidation and development of students' knowledge of Classical Greek language, through the study of syntax and the reading of a range of passages from Classical Greek texts. The module is designed for those who already have a good A-level knowledge of the language or have passed Intermediate Greek B. It prepares students for studying whole works in the original language and therefore provides a step towards our higher-level Greek literature courses taught in the original.Ìý

The module consists of three elements: (i) the reading of sections of Classical Greek prose and verse which students prepare in advance and read in class. Classes also provide an opportunity to consider grammatical issues and to discuss issues of literary significance; (ii) the consolidation of the principles of Greek language and syntax; and (iii) practice in reading and translating passages from Greek texts.

We will read:

Term 1: Lysias, Selected Speeches

Term 2:ÌýEuripides, Medea

Skills: In addition to improving their skills at reading and writing ancient Greek, this module offers students the opportunity to develop their skills at linguistic and literary analysis and criticism.

Required texts:

Edwards, M.J. (ed.), Lysias, Five Speeches: 1, 12, 19, 22, 30 (1999, Bristol Classical Press) – Term 1

D.J. Mastronarde (ed.), Euripides, Medea (2002, Cambridge) – Term 2

Guidance as to recommended textbooks on Greek grammar will be issued before the beginning of term 1.

Ìý

This module may be taken as 30 credits (two texts) or as 15 credits (one text, GREK0009). Students taking the module as 15 credits are expected to take it in the first term. Starting the module in the second term may be approved only with explicit permission from the Departmental Tutor.
