Summary
Adolescent Mental Health is a key area of concern for young people, parents, teachers as well as clinicians. There is increasing concern in the rise in mental health problems experienced by young people and how best to offer help and support.
This module explores models of adolescent development and then considers common mental health difficulties that present in adolescence and how they can be treated and managed. Depression, Anxiety, Psychosis, Eating Disorders as well as the Neurodevelopmental disorders are all considered.
Different models of service delivery are discussed as well as the issues that occur in the transition from CAMHS to Adult Services and how the interface and barriers between services can be negotiated and managed.
Learning Objectives and Outcomes:
The aims of this module are:
- To explore adolescent models of development
- To consider common mental health difficulties that present in adolescence and how they can be treated and managed.
- To explore different models of services available to adolescents and young people with mental health difficulties.
- To explore and understand the barriers to smooth transition at the interface of services between CAMHS and AMHS.
Who is this module for?
This is an optional module for the MSc Child and Adolescent Mental Health.
Teaching and Learning Methods
Where possible all teaching materials including PowerPoint’s and PDFs of key articles will be available on Moodle. Sessions will include a mixture of lectures, seminars, research paper discussion and small group work.
