Probably the son or nephew of Joshua Mayers Gittens (1741-1819) who had succeeded his father, the Honourable Colonel John Gittens, as the member of the Barbados Assembly for St. Philip parish in 1768. Joshua Mayers Gittens (1741-1819) remained in the Barbados Assembly until at least 1804. He served for a period of time as the Speaker of the Assembly. He also served as a Judge in many of the Barbados parishes. He was the Comptroller of Barbados, and Collector at Bridgetown in 1793. He was the owner of Pilgrim Plantation when he died.

The dates listed below have different categories as denoted by the letters in the brackets following each date. Here is a key to explain those letter codes:
|
1829 [EA] - 1834 [LA] → Attorney
The entry in the Barbados Slave Register 1832 notes [confusingly]: "Registered 1829 by the Reverend John H. Gittens as Attorney of Samuel Estwick since deceased." |
1820 [EA] - 1832 [LA] → Owner
As Joshua Mayers Gittens [senior] died in 1819 it must have been Gittens jun. who owned the plantation by 1820 and possibly before. |
1817 [EA] - 1817 [LA] → Attorney
Probably this J. M. Gittens junior: the Hon. Joshua Mayer Gittens died in 1819. |
Son → Father
