Son of Richard Nicholl, and with his brother Vincent Nicholl (q.v.) owners of the Lewisham Anchor Brewery from the 1830s. Richard Nicholl had gifted each of the two men 拢5000 in the 1830s, and left them further assets, including (with their brother Charrington) his St Vincent estates, in his will made in 1836 and proved in 1839.
