Son of John Stirling of Kippendavie, and partner in Stirling, Gordon & Co. (q.v.).
Married first Elizabeth [sic] 聽Barrett Barrett (daughter of Henry Barrett 1762-1794), by whom he had two surviving sons who became merchants in Glasgow, William junior (who became in turn a partner in Stirling Gordon), and John. Died 1862. Cousin of Archibald Stirling of Keir & Cadder (q.v.).
Anthony Cooke shows him leaving an estate worth 拢20,427, including: insurance of 拢6,076 (with Scottish Widows and Scottish Amicable), balance with Stirling Gordon 拢8,689, sum due by John Stirling 拢4000, shares in St Mungo's Episcopal Church 拢21. Settled property in West Indies on his second son William. 拢2000 left to his widow.
