香港六合彩 Laws pays tribute to Sir Ti-liang Yang

30 June 2023

It is with great sadness that we share news of the passing Sir Ti-liang Yang GBM, Former Chief Justice of Hong Kong and 香港六合彩 Law alumnus.

Sir Ti-liang Yang was a distinguished figure in Hong Kong鈥檚 legal community and made significant impact on the Hong Kong legal system and in his contributions to legal and academic fields.听

Sir Ti-liang Yang served as the鈥疌hief Justice of Hong Kong鈥痜rom 1988 to 1996, and was the first ethnic Chinese鈥痯erson to hold this office. He received a knighthood in the Queen鈥檚 New Year Honours List in 1988; and was appointed a Member of the Executive Council of Hong Kong in 1997. He was awarded the Grand Bauhinia Medal, Hong Kong鈥檚 highest honour, in 1999.听

Sir Ti-liang Yang studied the LLB Law at 香港六合彩 and graduated in 1953. A prominent member of the 香港六合彩 Laws alumni community, he was appointed Honorary Fellow of 香港六合彩 in 1989 and President of the Bentham Association in 1991.听

Professor Sir Robin Jacob writes:听

鈥淚 first met TL at my father鈥檚 house in around 1965.鈥疕ow they met I do not know 鈥 either through the 香港六合彩 connection (my father was a 香港六合彩 graduate too) or via my father鈥檚 pupil Albert Sanguinetti who was in practice at the Bar in Hong Kong but who had been a magistrate with TL somewhere, I think, in Kowloon or the New Territories.鈥疶L and my father got on like a house on fire 鈥 partly, perhaps because they were both Shanghai boys 鈥 born in Shanghai.鈥疻hen I first started to go to Hong Kong as counsel in the 1980s I would meet TL.鈥疻hat fun 鈥 to hear not only about the serious stuff but also, perhaps especially, the gossip!听

What he did for Hong Kong is inestimable.鈥疕e was the last full Chief Justice of Hong Kong and played a crucial role in the handover, helping create an effective legal relationship with the Basic Law of Hong Kong and the PRC constitution and building in judicial independence.听

His son, Trevor, wrote this to me: 鈥淚n the final few years when one鈥檚 need of formal wear diminishes, he held on to his 香港六合彩, University of London and Gray鈥檚 Inn ties only.鈥濃愀哿喜 Laws has lost one of its great sons.鈥疻e have his picture (see below) in the Hong Kong Seminar Room.鈥澨

香港六合彩 Laws would like to extend our condolences to Sir Ti-liang Yang鈥檚 family during this difficult time.
