IOE academic examines non-specialist teaching in new book
17 January 2019
Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Institute of Education academic Dr Cosette Crisan has contributed to a book examining non-specialist teaching across the world.
Non-specialist, or out-of-field teaching is the practice of teaching subjects or year levels without specific expertise in those areas.Â
The book contains cross-national comparisons of non-specialist teaching through case studies, descriptions of practice and research data, gathering a wide range of information on experiences, practices, and contexts relating to the area.
Dr Crisan’s work provides a framework for thinking about the knowledge and practices of subject-specific teaching and how these differ from one subject to another in traditional school curriculum. It explores the differences between subject-specific teaching and generic aspects of teaching and the difficulties non-specialist teachers face when teaching in that area, particularly when teaching maths.
Dr Crisan also contributed to a chapter on teacher learning and professional development for out-of-field teachers, particularly what makes it effective and the rationale for introducing these opportunities.
