David Wengrow and David Graeber’sÌýThe Dawn of Everything: A New History of HumanityÌýoffers a re-reading of the deep human past to help thinkers and activists trying to re-imagine today’s dysfunctional politics. If historical illiteracy and the absence of political imagination are two characteristic contemporary flaws,ÌýThe Dawn of EverythingÌýproposes new long-term historical narratives to remedy them. In particular, it subverts long-accepted narratives of development, state intensification, and resource exploitation which privilege the colonial gaze.

Reflecting the book’s interests, this panel discussion brings together specialists in North American archaeology, Amazonian anthropology, race and racism, and African history to discuss the book’s implications with David Wengrow. It will be chaired by the late David Graeber’s colleague, Alpa Shah.
