Retirement celebration for Prof. Elizabeth Shepherd

4 October 2024

The DIS ARM team 2024

On Sept 18th, the Dept of Information Studies, joined by many alums, former colleagues and students, friends and family, celebrated the work of Professor Elizabeth Shepherd, as she leaves Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê to enjoy her retirement.Ìý The Foundling Museum was a fitting venue, underlining the contribution Elizabeth has had on the recordkeeping discipline, as it had strong links to the Memory Identity Rights in Records Access (MIRRA) research project, an initiative she led on (see ).

Colleagues past and present paid tribute to her roles as researcher, educator, practitioner, mentor, and Head of Dept. These emphasized her significant contribution to the development of archives and records management as a recognised research discipline and her role as an educator underpinning the recordkeeping profession. Her influence on many individuals and communities, not just in the UK but internationally was surfaced but all acknowledged that there was too little time to fully talk about Elizabeth’s many contributions. The speeches came to an end with a standing ovation from a room filled to capacity by people who had benefitted from Elizabeth’s guidance and support, in a whole variety of ways.Ìý

The evening ended with canapes and drinks, much laughter, and a strong sense of the conviviality and connectivity which Elizabeth is so skilled at creating, whatever context she is in.Ìý We all wish her many happy new adventures in the future, and thank her, again, for everything she has done for the Dept, and for Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê and her discipline more widely!
