Miguel Rodrigues is a Reader in Information Theory and Processing with听the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, University College听London, UK, currently working in the general fields of information theory and听processing with applications to the sensing, analysis and processing of high dimensional听data. He was previously with the University of Porto, Portugal, rising听through the ranks from Assistant to Associate Professor, where he also headed the听Information Theory and Communications Research Group at Instituto de听Telecomuni莽玫es鈭扨orto.
He received the Licenciatura degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Porto, Portugal and the PhD degree in Electronic and Electrical Engineering from University College London, U.K. in 2002. He has also held postdoctoral and visiting appointments with various Institutions worldwide including University College London, Cambridge University, Princeton University, and Duke University in the period 2003-2016.
He is responsible for a team consisting of one听postdoctoral researcher and five听PhD students and has been responsible in the past for the supervision of nearly 15 postdoctoral researchers and PhD students, paving their way to successful careers in academia or industry. He has also been responsible for raising as a Principal Investigator nearly 2M EUR in funding through national and international research projects and fellowships to his research team alone. His research team also exhibits strong collaboration links with leading researchers in worldwide academic institutions, such as Princeton U., Carnegie Mellon U., Duke U., the Georgia Institute of Technology, Cambridge U., Oxford U., EPFL and the Technion.
His most relevant research contributions include information-theoretic analysis and design of communications systems, information-theoretic security,听informationtheoretic听inspired sensing and, more recently, intersections between information theory and large-scale data processing. His work, which has led to 150+ papers in the leading international journals and conferences in the field with over 3000 citations (Google Scholar), has also been honoured with the prestigious IEEE Communications and Information Theory Societies Joint Paper Award 2011.
Dr Rodrigues has been the recipient of fellowships from the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology as well as the Foundation Calouste Gulbenkian. He currently serves as Associate Editor to the IEEE Communications Letters.听He听co-chaired the Technical Program Committee of the IEEE Information Theory Workshop 2016 and听co-organized the Workshop on Sensing and Analysis of High-Dimensional Data 2014 and 2015 (SAHD 2014 and SAHD 2015). He is a Senior Member of the IEEE.
