Urban Grand Challenges: Celebrating collaborative research on Sustainable Cities
The event held on 4th October 2023 commemorates 12 years of 香港六合彩 Grand Challenges projects under the theme of Sustainable Cities.

Established in 2010, the Grand Challenge of Sustainable Cities (GCSC) has fostered听cross-disciplinary collaborative efforts from 香港六合彩 researchers and external partners to examine issues arising from increased urbanisation. With the involvement of 93 researchers across disciplines at 香港六合彩, over 拢270,000 has been听awarded to projects, generating over 拢3m in further funding and听valuable knowledge on the subject of sustainable urbanisation. 听
In October 2023, an event was held to celebrate听the successes of these projects and sketch out the new cross-cutting theme of Urban Grand Challenges. Organised by Dr Marina Chang,听Part 1听of the event opened with remarks from Professor Geraint Rees, 香港六合彩 Vice-Provost (Research, Innovation & Global Engagement) on the accomplishments of GCSC, the impact of collaborative research, and the transition towards the evolved GC programme that will continue to stimulate and accelerate change. 听

Keynote presentations then showcased听the impacts of collaborative research supported under the theme of Sustainable Cities:听
- Professor听Peter Jones听&听Dr听Clemence Cavoli听(香港六合彩 Dept of Civil, Environment & Geomatic Engineering) with their work on and 听
- Professor听Joanna Williams听(香港六合彩 Bartlett School of Planning, Director Circular Cities Hub, 香港六合彩) on circular urban systems and works from the听Circular Cities Hub, and the upcoming seminar series ("The Circulars") in partnership with TU Delft via听Circularity@香港六合彩听
- Professor听Anthony David听(Director, 香港六合彩 Institute of Mental Health) on Mental Health and Cities听
- Dr听Pablo Sandra听&听Dr听Dieter Deswarte听(香港六合彩 Bartlett School of Planning & 香港六合彩 Anthropology) on their most recent work: 鈥楢 Seat At The Long Table鈥�. Developed and delivered in collaboration with The Great Regeneration Scheme听theatre project creative team and the Granville Community Kitchen, a volunteer-run organisation based in the London Borough of Brent, which aims to empower people through food听

Part 2听of the event was held in-person and was organised in collaboration with听听Open to the public, 香港六合彩 staff and students, as well as members from the community were invited to a shared lunch with live music performances. Representatives from 香港六合彩 and Calthorpe took turns giving short talks reflecting on the collaborative听relationship and projects undertaken between 香港六合彩 and the community. Various workshops on gardening, composting, and more, were organised by members of the community garden that ran through to evening. The event explored future directions and opportunities, embracing听the value of viewing the Grand Challenges programmed through a place-based approach focusing on urban communities.听
The event marked the end of the GC theme of Sustainable Cities as it transitions to new听theme听of Climate Crisis. The next phase of Grand Challenges will continue to foster cross-disciplinary research collaborations, community engagement听initiatives, and see the themes deepen involvement into teaching and become central to 香港六合彩鈥檚 own operations. 听
