Global Engagement Funds (GEF)

Between £500-£5,000 is available per project to help support Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê staff in any field collaborate with colleaguesÌýin any other country around the world.ÌýFunding can support a wide variety of activities and research initiatives. The 2024/25 funding call opened on 24 May 2024 and closed on 21 June 2024.

Partner Funds

A number ofÌýfunding streams are available to support joint projects between Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê staff and those atÌýÏã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê's key global partner institutions.ÌýIn most cases, global partners have matched the funds committed by Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê for these funding streams, meaning larger overall pots of funding are available.ÌýSeveral funding streams open in the spring, with others becoming available from 6 Sep 2024.

Research Capacity Strengthening (RCS) Fellowship 2024

The RCS Fellowship is a joint initiative by Global Engagement (GE) and Research Innovation Services (RIS). It is designed to enhance research management ecosystems through bidirectional fellowships with global partners. Now in its second year, the RCS Fellowship has partnered with the University of Witwatersrand (Wits) and the University of Cape Town (UCT) in South Africa. In July 2024, Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê hosted three Fellows from Wits and UCT.ÌýThe RCS Fellowship opens on 2 SepÌýand will close on 23ÌýSepÌý2024.

Reach Alliance 2024 – call for proposal

This call for proposals seeks applications for funding to the next round of the Reach Alliance. Funding of up to £20k is available to support a team of 3-5 Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê students, mentored by 1 or 2 PIs, to lead an 18-month research project responding to an urgent challenge of reaching the hardest to reach.ÌýThe call opens on 30ÌýAugÌýand will close onÌý4 OctÌý2024.

Bringing Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê to Japan through Egyptology

With support from theÌýGlobal Engagement Funds (GEF), Dr Anna Garnett (Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Petrie Museum) is revitalising historical connections between Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê and Japan in Egyptian archaeology.

Understanding how party foot soldiers impact voters in Zimbabwe

Dr Adam Harris (Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Political Science) used Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê-Wits University Strategic Partner Funds to run focus groups with individuals affected by party foot soldiers in urban Zimbabwe.


Support for external global research funding

Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê provides support to help identify and develop strong research proposals for global research funding in low- and middle-income countries. This includes support and advice for Official Development Assistance (ODA) funded research activity. IfÌýso, applications must be referred to the relevantÌýResearch Facilitation or Coordination Office for your SchoolÌýthatÌýleadsÌýÏã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê’s internal selection processes. You should also seek approval from your department and Research Services in line with the usual approval process.
