Professor Hugh Clout reports:

Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Geography has two travel funds, established in the name of distinguished former colleagues, to support young staff and postgraduates in carrying out their research

The Bill Mead Travel Fund was set up when Professor Mead, the department’s long-serving head (1966-81), retired, based on contributions by Bill and his many friends. Bill took an active interest in its operation, and since his death in 2014 the awards have continued in his memory.

This year, seven applicants will benefit, supporting travel for research and conference attendance in Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, and Sweden.

The new Frank Carter Travel Fund was established by the late Mrs Krystyna Carter in memory of her husband, Professor Frank Carter, who taught the geography of Eastern Europe at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê and SSEES from 1966 until he died in 2001.

In 2019 ten researchers will receive awards to support conference travel and field research across Europe, in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Germany, the Netherlands, Portugal, Russia and Switzerland.

The next round of funding deadline will be 28 February 2020.
