Questioning approaches to urban informality

During her recent extended tour of Argentina, Chile and Uruguay, Professor Ann Varley was invited to give the inaugural lecture welcoming new postgraduate students to the Facultad de Arquitectura y Urbanismo of Chile’s leading university.

The lecture questioned some current understandings of the nature of informality associated with postcolonial urban studies. In thanking Ann, the Dean of the Faculty, Professor Marcela Pizzi Kirschbaum, presented her with a recent study of Santiago’s traditional neighbourhoods.

Ann had been visiting South America to conduct initial research on equal marriage and civil union for same-sex couples in Latin America.

Her trip was supported by the Dean’s Fund of the Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Faculty of Arts & Humanities (where Ann convenes the Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Gender & Sexuality Studies programme) and Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê/Santander Research Catalyst awards.
