Ecology and paleoecology in rare species conservation

Dr Isabel Bishop is the most recent member of the Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Geography Environmental Change Research Centre to be awarded a PhD.

Her thesis entitled, Understanding the habitat and decline of Najas flexilis in the UK using ecology and paleoecology, explores the disappearance of a rare aquatic plant from lakes in England and Scotland.

The work was supervised by Professor Helen Bennion and Dr Carl Sayer and funded by and Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê. The results of the research have been reported directly to SNH and will be applied to future conservation efforts.

Isabel will attend the graduation ceremony on July 3rd and plans to find a post-doctoral position that will allow her to continue her research in applied freshwater conservation.
