Celebrating Scottish Freshwater Research

The Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Geography Environmental Change Research Centre (ECRC) was well represented at the 100th Meeting of the , at the University of Sterling on 19-20 April.

The gathering celebrated the 50th year of the SFG, looking back on achievements in freshwater science, policy and practice, and forward to challenges and exciting current innovations in the field.

The meeting was partly organized by ECRC ‘old boy’, Laurence Carvalho, now based at the in Edinburgh.

Helen BennionÌý²¹²Ô»å Rick Battarbee presented a keynote lecture on Environmental Change in Scottish lochs, which showcased the research of the ECRC over the last two decades on both upland and lowland waters.

Ewan Shilland presented an overview of the 30-year aquatic macrophyte monitoring dataset collected as part of the UK Upland Waters Monitoring Network, while Isabel Bishop presented work from her and Hannah Robson’s recently completed PhDs on Saving Scotland’s rare species using palaeoecology.

The social highlight was the charity ceilidh with plenty of opportunity to chew the fat, do-si-do and strip the willow with friends and colleagues.
