As the Royal Society for Public Health launches its #ScrollFreeSeptember campaign, encouraging people to take time out from using social media, ICLS Director Yvonne Kelly has been discussing the centre's research into the links between heavy social media use and poorer outcomes for children and young people.

In a to coincide with the launch of the campaign, Professor Kelly, who has been using the Millennium Cohort Study to look at social media and young people's happiness, wellbeing, depressive symptoms and literacy, argues there is a growing body of evidence that points to the need to limit the time they spend using social media. She says the research carried out at ICLS indicates it is time to agree what healthy and safe social media use looks like and to offer clear guidance to all those involved in its development and use.
