Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê is delighted to announce the return of the popular and valuable Media Fellowship Scheme. Previously run by the British Science Association, this scheme was discontinued by the BSA in 2021. However, the stewardship of scheme has now been taken on by the Association of British Science Writers.

The ABSW Media Fellowships provide a unique opportunity for practising scientists, clinicians and engineers to spend two to six weeks working at the heart of a media outlet such as the Guardian, BBC Breakfast or Buzzfeed.

Previous Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê fellows under the BSA scheme includeÌýDr Lena Ciric, who worked at the BBC,ÌýÌýwho worked at the I newspaper, andÌýProf. Clare ElwellÌýwho worked at the Financial Times

Our four media fellows for 2022 are Dr Stijn Van Ewick from Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Civil, Environmental, and Geomatic Engineering, Dr Charlotte Maughan Jones from Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering, Dr Maria Perez Ortiz from Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Computer Science and Dr Leonie Tanczer from Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Science, Technology, Engineering and Public Policy.

Dr Stijn Van Ewick

Dr Stijn van Ewijk is a Lecturer in Environmental Engineering at the Department for Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering (CEGE). Stijn (pronounced "Stine") studies how modern societies use materials and energy, the consequences for the environment, and what we can do to make production and consumption sustainable. Stijn focuses on technologies and policies for waste management and the circular economy. Previously, Stijn was a Postdoctoral Associate at the Yale Center for Industrial Ecology and a Research Associate at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê. He was a visiting researcher at the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra).

DrÌýCharlotteÌýMaughanÌýJonesÌýis a Research Fellow in the AXIm group within the department of Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering.ÌýCharlotteÌýhas had a varied and unique career to date! She qualified as a Veterinary Surgeon and subsequently spent 4 years working as an equine veterinary surgeon, treating horses and donkeys in the South East of England. After some time working as a research assistant in a biomedical laboratory, she joined the AXIm group at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê to complete her PhD on x-ray and optical properties of biological tissues. In 2020 she was awarded the EPSRC Doctoral Prize fellowship, and her current work focuses on applications of advanced x-ray imaging techniques on the musculoskeletal system of the horse. Her research interests lie at the interface between human and veterinary clinical practice, bench side biomedical science and engineering, and she is a strong advocate for adopting the "One Health" model of research. Outside of the laboratory,ÌýCharlotteÌýis an active STEM ambassador within local schools, and has recently been the driving force behind a successful "Royal Society Partnership Grant" application with a local primary school.Ìý

Dr Maria Perez-Ortiz is Assistant Professor at the Department ofÌýComputer Science and the Artificial Intelligence Centre at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê.Ìý

Previously she was Senior Research Fellow at the same department andÌýResearch Associate at the University of Cambridge. Her research focusesÌýon developing responsible AI models with an interdisciplinaryÌýperspective and connections to social and environmental sustainability,Ìýhaving worked in the last 10 years in biomedicine, sustainableÌýagriculture, climate change and environmental modelling, neuroscienceÌýand educational technology. She is generally interested in assessing theÌýimpact that such technologies have on our social and environmentalÌýecosystems, and aims to include such assessment in the ideation andÌýdesign process, to help ensure technologies remain beneficial andÌýsustainable.

Dr. Perez-Ortiz is currently working on bringing sustainability andÌýresponsible innovation topics to the computer science arena. She hasÌýrecently joined a committee to improve education for sustainability atÌýÏã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê and is program co-lead of the first MSc program on AI forÌýSustainable Development, as well as module leader of two courses at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê:ÌýÌýi) AI for Sustainable Development and ii) Transparent, Accountable andÌýResponsible AI. As part of this line of work, she is also organisingÌýscientific events surrounding the ecosystemic challenges that arise withÌýthese technologies, and aiming to introduce broader socio-technical andÌýsocio-ecological perspectives to the field of AI.

Dr Leonie Tanczer
