Prof John Mitchell appointed as Head of the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering

We are pleased to announce that Prof John Mitchell has been appointed as the new Head of the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê, effective from September 2024.

Prof Mitchell’s journey at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê began as an Electronic and Electrical Engineering undergraduate where he went on to complete his PhD within the department before launching a successful research career by becoming a Research Fellow in 1999.

Prof Mitchell’s technical research has focused on networks and communication systems engineering. As an academic his teaching activity led him to develop a deep interest in pedagogy and engineering education. Over the past two decades, Prof Mitchell has not only made significant contributions to his technical discipline but has also pioneered transformative approaches in engineering education and curriculum development.

In his previous role as Vice-Dean of Education in the Faculty of Engineering Sciences, Prof Mitchell spearheaded several transformative initiatives, including the highly regarded Integrated Engineering Programme (IEP). His work in this area has made Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê a leader in research-based education and authentic assessment, setting new standards for engineering education globally.

Prof Mitchell’s commitment to education extends beyond the classroom. He has been a strong advocate for the recognition and career progression of teaching staff, contributing significantly to the development of the Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Education Awards. His leadership has been instrumental in fostering a collaborative and inclusive educational environment. Throughout his engineering research career, he has held a range of editorial positions at the International Journal of Electrical Engineering Education IJEEE, IET Optoelectronics, IEEE Transactions on Education and currently as an Associate Editor at the European Journal of Engineering Education.

We would also like to take this opportunity to express our deepest gratitude to Professor Sarah Spurgeon for her outstanding service as the outgoing Head of Department. Prof Spurgeon’s leadership has been pivotal in guiding the department to new heights, and we thank her for her dedication and numerous contributions.

As Prof Mitchell steps into his new role, we look forward to an exciting future under his visionary leadership. With deep expertise in Electronic and Electrical Engineering, where he progressed from Lecturer to Professor of Communications Systems Engineering at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê, Prof Mitchell brings a wealth of subject knowledge to the department. His innovative approach and unwavering commitment to educational excellence will undoubtedly drive our department forward, continuing to enhance our reputation as a global leader in electronic and electrical engineering.
