Voted the best documentary of all time by film critics, Man With A Movie Camera (dir. Dziga Vertov, 1929) depicts a single day in the lives of Soviet citizens shortly after the death of Lenin. From getting out of bed to going to work and play, this is a unique fly-on-the-wall look into the optimistic beginnings of the USSR.
Made by the inventor of numerous cinematic techniques, from freeze frames to slow motion and Dutch angles, this is a must-see film for those interested in the history of film, the USSR, and social history.
The screening will be preceded by Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê’s Professor Michael Berkowitz addressing the historical significance of the film, and in particular, its relationship to the Jewish engagement with photography in this period. A question and answer session will follow. This event is part of the Festival of Early Jewish Cinema at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê.
