Introducing the ‘Tube Surfers’ team.

12 July 2021

A group of our PhD students won a departmental ‘Curiosity Research Grant’ to undertake a transport research project.

London Underground train

Jordy Adjagboni, Alexander Blakesley, Julia Foellmer, Jan Luca Kastle and Octavio Zamudio Lopez won the grant to set up their group, ‘Tube Surfers’. Over the course of the next year, they will be researching how to make the Tube more comfortable for commuters.

Their vision is to help Londoners manage their expectations and plan journeys according to their individual preferences by identifying potential areas of improvement. Therefore, the Tube Surfers plan to collect and analyse environmental data on all lines in zone 1 and 2, including noise, temperature, acceleration, and air quality. Additionally, the researchers will measure their own experiences. They will use this research to develop a Temperature and Resonance in an Underground Environment (TRUE) Tube Map to help Londoners take better decisions about their journeys.

Of their project the team said:   'As frequent users of the London underground, it would be great to have an insight into comfort levels along different lines and stations. With the TRUE Tube map, commuters can take into consideration comfort in choosing their route. This map will help Londoners make the most of their daily commute, whether this means knowing where it is safe to drink their coffee without risking to spill it or listening to music without being disturbed by high noise levels.'
