The Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Research Department of Structural and Molecular Biology is world-leading in the study of fundamental biological and medical problems at the atomic, molecular, cellular and organism level. Our researchers and students have access to a wide range of cutting-edge facilities.
The Darwin Research Facility is a suite of state-of-the-art research laboratories and support areas. The facility provides a diverse range of equipment, expertise and training in the field of biochemistry, molecular, structural and cellular biology.
The Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Molecular Interactions Facility has its own on-site instrumentation in terms of two analytical ultracentrifuges (AUC), surface plasmon resonance (Biacore X100) and dual polarisation interferometry (DPI), plus protein purification facilities.
The availability of two AUC instruments in the lab makes possible simultaneous velocity and equilibrium experiments so that protein associative behaviour in solution can be explored in detail. We also possess Biacore surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and dual polarisation interferometry (DPI) equipment
Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê's range of Mass Spectrometry facilities ensures researchers have timely access to equipment, resources and the expertise necessary to undertake world-leading research.
Researchers have access to three Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy Laboratories at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê. The spectrometers are at 400 MHz, 500 MHz additionally equipped with a cryoprobe and a multichannel 500, 600, 700 and 800 MHz NMR spectrometer.
Isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) is a physical technique used to determine the thermodynamic parameters of interactions in solution.
A Visible CD spectroscopy is a very powerful technique to study metal–protein interactions and can resolve individual d–d electronic transitions as separate bands
The Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê/Birkbeck ISMB Protein Crystallography and Biophysics Centre has a variety of equipment is available for sample characterisation and optimisation, crystallisation, crystal monitoring as well as for equilibrium and kinetic studies of proteins, nucleic acids, small molecules and their interactions.
