The Bartlett graduate, Ella McCoshan (Space Syntax: Architecture & Cities MSc, 2022), has received the prestigious 2024 Fulbright-Elsevier Data Analytics Award to support her PhD studies at Yale University.

The Fulbright-Elsevier Data Analytics Award provides funding for UK graduates to pursue any postgraduate degree requiring data analytics to advance understanding of research, at any US university. Ella was selected from a strong applicant pool following a rigorous application and interview process based on academic excellence, community-focused activities and leadership skills. Through the award, she will work under the mentorship of Prof Karen Seto at the Seto Lab for Urbanisation and Global Change.

Commenting on the award, Ella said:

I am excited about this opportunity to participate in a scholarship programme that delivers real impact, advancing human knowledge and tackling global challenges. I am really looking forward to going to Yale, diving into research and collaborating with international organisations, governments and communities. I am also particularly excited to meet new people and explore a whole variety of new environments across the US. As a keen French horn player, I hope to get involved with many new music ensembles, performances and community initiatives. I can’t wait to embrace life across the pond!”

Situating spatial data science through a multidisciplinary lens

Ella is a spatial data scientist and urban planner interested in tackling the complex challenges associated with urban change, from enhanced hazard exposure to public health crises. In addition to her Bartlett degree, Ella holds an MA in Economics from the University of Cambridge.

Since 2021, Ella has contributed to urban development projects across several continents, engaging with diverse topics including containing unsustainable urban sprawl, monitoring street network and land use change, and promoting walkable urban environments. These experiences have reinforced her awareness of the growing data and knowledge gaps surrounding processes of urban change, particularly in the Global South.

As a doctoral student in the Seto Lab at Yale University, Ella will develop novel research and methods to support equitable and resilient urban change across global contexts. She is excited to explore the dynamics of urban change, particularly in informal areas, and collaborate with international organisations, governments and communities.
