Lecturer's Abstract
Christoph Lindner compares the conditions of hyper-creativity in Amsterdam and Portland and explores, within them,Ìýthe phenomenon of hipsterficationÌý(gentrification-by-hipster). He focusses on what happens when cities fetishise creativity and embrace excess in the pursuit of accelerated development.
Biography
Christoph Lindner is Dean of The Bartlett Faculty of the Built Environment and Professor in Urban Studies at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê, where he writes about cities, globalisation, and issues of social-spatial inequality.Ìý
His most recent research projects include: visual politics of urban pollution and climate change; ‘ghost living’ in Detroit and Mumbai; gentrification and urban memory in Amsterdam; slowness and boredom in the age of acceleration; Brutalist architecture and creative insurgency in Europe and Latin America; the global rise of elevated parks in post-industrial cities.Ìý
Christoph’s book publications include (Oxford University Press, 2015), as well as the edited volumes (Rutgers University Press, 2017), (Routledge, 2016), (Bloomsbury, 2016), (I.B. Tauris, 2014), and (Amsterdam University Press, 2013).
